Black Nylon Tapewounds

There has been a lot of discussion about what is underneath Black Nylon Tapewound bass strings... I decided to sacrifice some strings and take a look.

Examined were:
  • D'Addario
  • Fender (New 9120)
  • GHS
  • La Bella (760N Original Gauge)
  • Rotosound Tru-Bass 88

I cut the strings to reveal the under windings.  I found with all of the strings except for the Rotosound Tru-Bass 88's the black tape started to unravel around the string and stayed loosely coiled.  With the Rotosound I had to pull the tape to revel the under-windings.  With the current Fender 9120's the tape is still a flat tape, but it has some kind of glossy finish applied to it giving them a more glassy feel.

D'Addario Black Nylon Tapewounds:

Available in Short Scale, Medium Scale, and Long Scale.  Long scale is available in 4 and 5 string sets.  Smooth tapewound feel in a flexible string.  Blue Silk at the Ball End and Tuning Post.  Colored ball ends help clearly identify the strings.  Below the Black Nylon Tapewound string is a standard looking Round Wound string.

Fender Black Nylon Tapewounds:

Available in Long Scale 4-String Sets only.  The Fender Black Nylon Tapewounds have Black Silk at the Ball Ends and Tuning Post section.  The tape appears to have been treated with some type of gloss after it was wound.  This gives them a slick feel.  Fender 9120 Black Nylon Tapewounds are Round Wound under the Black Nylon winding.

GHS Black Nylon Tapewounds:

Available in Long Scale in 4 and 5 string sets.  These are the most unique of the Black Nylon Tapewound strings.  These strings feature Red Silk at the Ball End and Tuning Post sections.  The tuning post sections on these are thicker so take that into consideration when using these strings on instruments with smaller tuning posts.  Under the tape on the E, A, and D strings the strings appear to be similar to GHS Brite Flats which start as Round Wounds that are then ground to a flat smooth surface - aka Half Rounds.  This type of Half-Round string gets more mass into a smaller diameter string, this will also help keep the overall diameter of the Tapewound string smaller while.  In the photo for the A-String below you can see where the string goes from being a full on Round Wound to ground smooth.

La Bella Deep Talkin' Black Nylon Tapewounds:

La Bella Deep Talkin' Black Nylon Tapewounds are available in 4, 5, and 6 string sets.  All available in Short, Medium, Long, and Extra Long scale lengths.  The B-String features a Tapered winding over the bridge saddle.  La Bella Black Nylon Tapewounds are probably the smoothest and silkiest feeling of the bunch.  Smooth tone that still has a bright high end to it.  They feature Purple Silk at the Ball End and Tuning Post sections.  Round Wound strings are found under the Black Nylon Tape windings.  They are also made for Double Ball End instruments and Hofner Beatle Bass or other instruments with smaller tuning posts.

Rotosound Tru-Bass 88 Black Nylon Tapewound:

Rotosound Black Nylon Tapewounds are available in Short, Medium, Long and Extra Long scale.  Available in 4, 5, and 6 string sets.  Rotosound tapewounds feature Gold colored silk at the Ball End and Tuning Post sections.  Round Wound strings are found under the Black Nylon Windings.
