DR Hi-Beam strings are Stainless Steel Bass Strings wound on Round Cores.  DR Hi-Beam stainless steel bass strings are round wound and constructed upon a round core which is unique in the industry.  DR Hi-Beam bass strings require much more time, care, and extra steps to make than other bass strings.  The extra effort the DR expends making Hi-Beams results in a bass string that is highly flexible, musically bright (not harshly bright) and renowned for durability, unusually long life, consistency, and string-to-string balance.  The DR Hi-Beam strings do not eat your frets.  Hi-Beams are the string to choose for brightness, punch and ease of playing.

String Construction:

  • Stainless Steel Round Wound
  • Round Core
  • Short / Medium Scale: 34" Winding Ball to Taper
  • Custom Long Scale: 36.5" Winding Ball to Taper
  • Long Scale: 38" Winding Ball to Taper (Standard)
  • Extra Long Scale: 40.7" Winding Ball to Taper

DR Hi-Beam
These are my go to strings. They have great dynamic mids(awesome mids!) with a crisp high. Almost piano like. These are not the deepest strings you'll find but I think there is plenty. Honestly these are the first string I've ever used that actualy made me say WOW. I put them on, tuned it up and started jamming out and thought holy cow! these sound great! These strings are smooth. So far the smoothest steel strings I've used. They feel much more like a good set of nickles than steels. Because of the round core rather than the normal hex these strings have a lot of flex in them. you can bend and twist these any way you want. I can even bend the E strings on the first fret until its touching the A string and still have some room for more. Because of how flexable they are I warn you that you should get at least one gauge larger of Hi-Beams than you would of your normal brand. I personaly when with 2 guages larger and have been happy. If you don't get the larger gauge you will get a lot of fret buzz if your heavy handed like I am. These strings do truly sound great but only if your looking for an interesting mid section on your sound. If your looking for thundering thumping lows I would look elsewhere. For me these strings last between 1-2 months before they start loosing there clearity. For me thats a long time as I have the acid touch of death. Nickles usualy last me about 1-2 weeks so that tells you something.

Lovin' it
I found out about this site on the talkbass forum. Great service, quick responses to my emails, very pleasant experience overall. As for these strings...well we don't get them here, in fact bass strings are not only crazy expensive in local stores, we have a pretty poor selection to choose from, and based on numerous glowing reviews I decided to try these out. Initial impressions are very favorable indeed. Very clear response, sound great when slapped, and in the upper registers they sing like a canary. Still early days so will have to see how they hold up, but right now I'm very happy with them!

Great sound, lousy balance
The title says it all. These have an amazing sound on my Sting bass, but they aren't even close to balanced tension. The A is extremely high tension, the E is floppy, the others in between. It makes for an unpleasant playing experience, but the sound is worth it.

Praise bassist
I am a finger-style player who likes a bright tonal palette. I have medium-lite four-string sets on my Dingwall Super J and Super P and am quite happy with them. DR quality is consistent - I have never received a 'dud' string. The feel is good and they deliver what I want to hear for a reasonable time. I typically re-string every two months, so appreciate the very reasonable price when purchasing two sets!

Good strings, not perfect
I decided to try out various kinds of Stainless Steel strings, to see what other options there were besides my standard Rotosound 66s. I'd heard lots of good things about DRs, and when I put them on, I was slightly underwhelmed. Nothing wrong with them, per se, but they just weren't as much to my liking as most of the other strings I tried. I had them on a Fender Jazz Bass, and the Hi-Beams seemed almost inherently scooped a little in the mid section, which played poorly with the Jazz Bass's natural scoop. Otherwise, the strings sounded fine, even on a Jazz bass, but they seemed to lack attitude. Also of note is that of the 3 sets I've tried, they all seemed to break unusually soon when compared to other strings. I've had dud sets of other strings as well, but all 3 of the DR sets I put on broke fairly quickly. I had better luck on the third set, but it still was too early. Overall, these are good strings, but they're not for everyone. Some people claim they last forever, and I don't doubt it, but I've had better luck with every other string I've used. The altered feel of the strings due to the rounded core is also something to consider. It's not insurmountable, but it changes the way the strings feel under your fingers significantly. Try them out if you want, but don't expect Stainless Steel Rapture.
