Good strings, not perfect
I decided to try out various kinds of Stainless Steel strings, to see what other options there were besides my standard Rotosound 66s. I'd heard lots of good things about DRs, and when I put them on, I was slightly underwhelmed. Nothing wrong with them, per se, but they just weren't as much to my liking as most of the other strings I tried. I had them on a Fender Jazz Bass, and the Hi-Beams seemed almost inherently scooped a little in the mid section, which played poorly with the Jazz Bass's natural scoop. Otherwise, the strings sounded fine, even on a Jazz bass, but they seemed to lack attitude.
Also of note is that of the 3 sets I've tried, they all seemed to break unusually soon when compared to other strings. I've had dud sets of other strings as well, but all 3 of the DR sets I put on broke fairly quickly. I had better luck on the third set, but it still was too early.
Overall, these are good strings, but they're not for everyone. Some people claim they last forever, and I don't doubt it, but I've had better luck with every other string I've used. The altered feel of the strings due to the rounded core is also something to consider. It's not insurmountable, but it changes the way the strings feel under your fingers significantly.
Try them out if you want, but don't expect Stainless Steel Rapture.
